Five ways to eat healthily on a budget
Healthy eating doesn't have to cost the earth, you just need to be shopping savvy.
In today's economical climate, not many of us have spare cash to spend on organic produce and health foods - but should this stop us from eating healthily? While it may seem the easy choice to pick up fast food and processed meals, you must ask yourself how much of a bargain they really are.
When you consider the effect these foods are having on your health, waistline and wellbeing, how much are you really saving? Eating healthily can lead to fewer sick days and less time spent at the doctors - which will ultimately save you money.
The following tips will help you shop smartly so you can eat healthily on a budget...
1. Buy foods in season
Fresh fruit and vegetables are cheaper when they are in season, so get to know which season produces which foods and alter your meals accordingly.
2. Buy frozen foods and stock up
Frozen foods not only eliminate the issue of throwing away gone-off produce, they can also be bought in bulk as they keep for months. Bulk-buy and stock up on frozen fruit, veg and lean meats so you always have something healthy to eat.
3. Start your day with a protein shake
Instead of wasting money on your usual coffee and muffin on the way to work, try blending your own protein shake for a fast, easy and nutritious breakfast that will keep you full and focused for hours.
4. Prepare ahead of time
To avoid spending your money on last minute take-aways because you don't have time (or can't be bothered) to cook, try to prepare your dinner ingredients ahead of time.
5. Make your own
Instead of reaching for your favourite ready-meal, try cooking from scratch. Not only will you save money by buying the raw ingredients, you will know exactly what goes into your food and avoid any hidden nasties.
