Tier 1: zero friction emergency fuel (when your battery is at 1% to 10%)
When task initiation is completely offline, sensory overload is high, and your energy is critically low, drop all traditional rules about what constitutes a proper meal.
The clinical goal: get fast, accessible glucose and protein into your system to stabilise your brain without using any preparation or cleanup capacity.
What this looks like: a protein shake, a pouch of smooth yoghurt, a handful of almonds and dried fruit eaten straight from the bag, pre-portioned cheese strings, a slice of bread eaten plain, or a spoonful of peanut butter straight from the jar.
The neuro-affirming mindset: eating meal components individually delivers the exact same vitamins, minerals, and calories as assembling them on a plate. Deconstructed eating is still complete eating.
Tier 2: assembly-only nourishment (when your battery is at 25% to 50%)
When you have a small amount of capacity, focus entirely on no-cook assembly.

What this looks like: crackers with pre-grated cheese and cherry tomatoes, microwave rice pouches mixed with tinned tuna or pre-cooked chicken, pitta bread dipped in ready-made houmous, or yoghurt topped with granola and frozen berries.
The neuro-affirming mindset: lean heavily on ready-made or pre-prepared shortcuts. Using tinned, frozen, or pre-chopped ingredients is a smart, energy-preserving choice.
Tier 3: low spoons cooking (when your battery is at 50%+)
When your capacity is moderate, and you feel a spark of culinary interest, choose low-monitoring, batch-friendly options.
The clinical goal: maximise portions while minimising time spent in the kitchen and the quantity of dirty dishes.
What this looks like: one-tray oven bakes, slow-cooker stews, or baking-tray components roasted in the oven using frozen pre-cut vegetables and pre-marinated proteins.
The neuro-affirming mindset: low-spoons cooking on higher-capacity days isn't an obligation to prove you can meet neurotypical expectations; it's an intentional investment in your future low-spoon self. Batching extra portions during a burst of energy is an act of deep kindness to your future nervous system.
3 core rules for neuro-affirming self-care
