About me

Use discount code NR10 when booking to receive a unique 10% discount on your initial 60-minute online consultation with me at The Gut Health Clinic. The clinic is recognised by major health insurers, including Aviva, Bupa, Cigna, Healix, Vitality and WPA.

I'm Joe Alvarez, a specialist gut health dietitian at The Gut Health Clinic, supporting adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and a range of digestive symptoms. With around 10 years of clinical experience, I combine evidence-based practice with a strong personal understanding of IBS, having lived with the condition myself, and bring a compassionate, highly individualised approach to every consultation.

I offer online consultations, so I can support clients wherever they are based, including Spanish-speaking clients, as I am fully fluent in Spanish. I also provide an affirming, respectful space for LGBTQ+ clients.

How I can help you

I support people dealing with persistent gut symptoms, a new or longstanding IBS diagnosis, or digestive issues that haven't responded to previous advice.

My areas of expertise include:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including diarrhoea-predominant, constipation-predominant and mixed subtypes
  • Bloating, abdominal pain and altered bowel habits
  • Low FODMAP dietary management
  • Food intolerances and their relationship with gut symptoms
  • Gut health and its connection to mental well-being and daily life

I also support individuals with:

  • General digestive symptoms without a formal diagnosis
  • Lifestyle and dietary strategies for long-term symptom management
  • Non-medical prescribing is needed where appropriate

My approach

Living with IBS myself, I understand how much digestive symptoms can affect confidence, daily life and relationships with food. That personal experience shapes the way I work.

I take an evidence-based, individualised approach, recognising that no two people respond to food, stress or lifestyle factors in the same way. Rather than applying generic advice, I focus on identifying the specific drivers of your symptoms and building a structured, realistic plan that helps you regain control without unnecessary restriction.

The Gut Health Clinic

I work at The Gut Health Clinic, a specialist service led by gut health scientist Dr Megan Rossi (@theguthealthdoctor). The clinic brings together a team of expert gastro dietitians with 80 years of combined clinical experience and has supported more than 5,000 clients since 2018.

We work closely with GPs, gastroenterologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure your care is fully integrated and aligned with your wider medical needs.

What to expect in your first session

Your first appointment is a structured consultation where we take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and goals in detail.

Following this, you’ll receive a personalised plan with clear, practical steps to move forward. I’ll also guide you on how many sessions you'll likely need, so you have clarity from the outset.

If you have private health insurance (including Aviva, Bupa, Cigna, Healix, Vitality or WPA), your appointments may be covered. Get in touch, and we can guide you through this.
