Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have funded studies which have found white button mushrooms increase activity in critical cells in the body’s immune system.
White button mushrooms actually make up a whopping 90 per cent of the total mushrooms consumed in the United States, but despite this very little research has been conducted into their health properties until very recently.
The new animal research has found that the mushrooms boost the immune system by increasing the production of proteins that fight disease causing pathogens and have a positive impact on immune system cells known as denritic cells.
Denritic cells have the ability to make white blood cells (T cells) which are an essential component of a strong and healthy immune system. They pick up on and then destroy any invading microbes such as bacteria and viruses. They also may play a role in the body’s fight against cancer.
The researchers found that the effect of the mushrooms had a lot to do with the dosage, the more mushrooms the better the effect, so get eating!
