For those who are unable to take cholesterol lowering medicines this comes as fantastic news. The expected outcome of drugs specifically aimed at lowering cholesterol in the same span of time is approximately between 10 and 20 percent.
The study looked at the effects of flaxseed lignan in 90 men and women who were diagnosed with high cholesterol but otherwise healthy. For a period of three months they ingested 150 milligrams per day of flaxseed. When the study was complete it was found that only the male participants benefited from the change in diet.
Flaxseed can be eaten whole and and used in cooking or it can be taken as a supplement, available from most health food shops.
