Healthy food standards in schools ‘eroded’ says Jamie Oliver

November 28th, 2011 0 comments
TV chef Jamie Oliver has spoken up about how he feels Education Secretary Michael Gove has allowed unhealthy foods to seep back into English schools.

Oliver famously campaigned for healthy food standards to be implemented in schools throughout England – a move that prompted the removal of vending machines containing confectionary from schools, and school lunches meeting strict nutritional guidelines.

However, Oliver has now accused current Education Secretary Michael Gove of allowing these standards to slip with many of England’s new ‘academy’ schools not having to meet the standards that Oliver worked to have put in place.

The government have said that it trusts academy schools to implement their own healthy eating standards if they feel it is in the best interests of their pupils, and has no reason to believe that they will not provide meals which don’t meet the current national standards – a comment which was met with a stormy...

Chemical risk from soup cans

November 24th, 2011 0 comments
According to the results of a recent study, the chemicals used to line the inside of a soup can could seep into the food itself and may end up inside the body.

The chemical used to line cans, bisphenol A (BPA), had already been banned from baby bottle in the EU but is currently still used as a coating for soup cans because it prevents the tin from rusting and keeps the soup fresh.

In a test of 75 adults it was revealed that BPA was ingested when the participants ate soup and it was then detected in large amounts of their urine.

Study author Jenny Carwhile has said that it has been known for some time now that consuming beverages which are packaged in hard plastic packages can increase BPA ingestion, but this study suggests that canned foods may be cause for additional concern given their wide usage.

As it stands the levels of BPA obtained from soup cans does not pose a risk to the health of consumers, but the findings have warranted...

Want to lose weight? Relax, say doctors

November 21st, 2011 0 comments
Scientists have discovered the gene that makes us crave sugary, fatty foods when we’re under stress.
relax to cut cravings

Nicknamed the ‘comfort eating gene’, it pumps out a protein called Ucn3 during times of stress. Ucn3 has significant effects throughout the body, affecting vital organs such as the liver, heart, liver and pancreas.

The protein is thought to increase appetite, affect how full we feel and control insulin.

Findings from research conducted on mice show that Ucn3 can also trigger a craving for sugary or fatty foods due to the body’s extra requirements during times of extreme stress.

For people who experience everyday stresses, it is easy to give into cravings and become overweight and unhealthy.

On a primeval level, stress helps us to cope with extreme situations, such as coming face to face with a predator or any dangerous situation. In these situations, your body suddenly craves energy and this can be in the...

Get an ‘eggsellent’ start to your day…

November 17th, 2011 0 comments
Recent research has revealed that some of the proteins present in eggs could help us to feel awake and alert.

During the 1960s the Egg Marketing board launched a campaign with the slogan ‘Go to work on egg’, in an attempt to convince cereal and toast lovers up and down the country that an egg based breakfast is better than a sugar laden one for keeping you awake and alert during work.

Well it would seem that the Egg Marketing Board were right after all, because according to researchers from Cambridge University, some of the proteins which are found in eggs (particularly in egg whites) are far more effective in helping us to stay awake than the carbohydrates found in chocolate and biscuits.

The researchers looked at how certain nutrients can affect the brain cells that keep us awake. What they found was that a mixture of proteins very similar in make-up to that of the content found in egg whites, activated these cells and triggered the release...

Say goodbye to boxing-day left-overs as turkey prices soar

November 14th, 2011 0 comments
The rise of grain prices affecting turkey farmers this year has had a noticeable impact on UK supermarkets, with poultry prices soaring.
xmas turkey too expensive

As the Christmas season approaches (or peeks, for the supermarkets), our pockets are bound to start feeling the strain. Of course, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a huge, golden turkey taking centre-place on the dining-table, but with prices so high- will we all be able to afford one this year?

A survey by BrandView.co.uk and The Grocer magazine has found that the cost of fresh turkey has increased in percentage by double digits this year.

The Bernard Matthews extra large Golden Norfolk turkey from Tesco has gone up in price by a staggering 16.7% since last year- that’s £5. Similarly, buying a modest sized breast joint from Morrisons will set you back 12.5% from last year, at £4.49 extra.

One spokesman from the British Turkey Information Service (no, we haven’t made this up),...

Could a healthy diet hold the key to beating psoriasis?

November 10th, 2011 0 comments
Seven-year old Callum Lowe suffered with severe psoriasis for years until some simple changes to his diet helped to clear up the uncomfortable skin condition.

From a very early age Callum Lowe was affected by a skin condition known as psoriasis. Psoriasis is characterised by scaly red and white patches on the body and for Callum these patches covered up to 60 per cent of his body.

The condition is caused by overactive immune cells which speed up the production of skins cells which don’t shed as quickly as they are created. This series of events results in the development of the scaly patches.

A third of psoriasis sufferers have a family history of the disease, though injury and stress are known to be contributing factors in some cases.

In Callums case, doctors tried a variety of treatments in a bid to reduce the severity of his skin condition, ranging from steroid creams right through to immuno-suppressant drugs and even light...

Could red wine help with weight loss? Scientists discover the slimming effects of Resveratrol, found in grapes

November 7th, 2011 0 comments
According to a recent small study, taking resveratrol supplements could help lower sugar and fat levels in the bloodstream and reduce blood pressure.
red wine lose weight

Resveratrol, found in grape skin, was given in a purified form to 6 obese men in daily doses of 150mg for 30 days.  Another 6 in the same group were given a placebo as a method of control. For increased control, the placebo group were switched with the resveratrol group after 4 weeks.

Regular measurements of the resveratrol group showed a decrease in blood sugar levels, an improvement in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in triglycerides. Triglycerides, like cholesterol, are a fatty substance that can build up and cause blockages, leading to cardiac disease and heart attack. Resveratrol was also found to reduce sleeping and resting metabolic rate and reduce blood pressure.

Resveratrol works in a similar way to calorie restriction by triggering the production of a protein known as SIRT1. This is...

Cherry juice – the new alternative to counting sheep?

November 3rd, 2011 0 comments
Could a glass of cherry juice before bed be the answer to a good nights sleep?

According to a recent study conducted by a team of researchers from Northumbria University, drinking cherry juice can significantly increase the production of the sleep inducing hormone melatonin.

Drinking a glass of Montmorency cherry juice before bedding down for the evening could help you to get an extra 25 minutes of sleep per night.

According the study, which involved participants drinking a 30ml serving of the juice each day for seven days, levels of sleep regulating melatonin found in their urine increased by between 15 and 16%.

Exercise physiologist Dr Howatson has said that the results of this study could be used to facilitate healthy sleep in adults, for instance in those who suffer from insomnia related to shift work, or from jet lag.
