The health benefits of a Mediterranean diet
After a ten-year study conducted by researchers at the University of Maastricht revealed that a Mediterranean diet combined with 30 minutes of exercise per day could help women to live up to 15 years longer, dietician Nigel Denby has revealed why the Mediterranean way is one of the healthiest around.
According to Denby, those who follow a traditional Mediterranean diet can enjoy a range of health benefits.
‘Plenty of fruits and vegetables, lots of unsaturated healthy oils like olive oil and sunflower oil, plenty of fish, pulses and whole grains all have a mountain of evidence behind them individually as being important parts of a healthy diet.’ He said.
Research has proven that when the benefits of all of these foods are combined together they can offer protection against a range of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers.
Mediterranean diets also contain high amounts of antioxidants which are absorbed through the fruit and vegetables eaten, as well as lots of healthy oils which have a positive effect on the heart.
