Eating your greens gives you healthy glowing skin, says study
A team of scientists working at the University of St Andrews in Scotland have found that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables is the best way to achieve healthy glowing skin.
Lead researcher on the project Dr Ian Stephen has said that though many people in the West believe the best way of improving your skin colour is to get a suntan, research shows that eating lots of fruit and vegetables can be just as effective.
The study involved the research team assessing the skin colour of individuals in relation to their diet. After this they were able to find that those who ate more portions of fruit and vegetables a day were found to have a more golden, yellow skin colour.
The researchers also used a spectrophotometer, which is a scientific instrument used to measure the way that light in various parts of the spectrum is absorbed by the skin.
The results of the spectrophotometer revealed that those who had a healthy glow had a higher level of carotenoids in the body, which are yellow and red antioxidants commonly found in many fruit and vegetables.
So if you were considering a session on the sun beds then perhaps you would be better off with a big plate of fruit and veg!
