Can a few changes in diet relieve hay fever symptoms?

May 4th, 2010
Recent studies have found that certain supplements and healthy eating may relieve certain hay fever symptoms.

If you, like many are unlucky enough to find yourself with red, itchy, puffy eyes, a runny nose, scratchy throat and constant sneezing fits then there could be an alternative to the usual hay fever sufferers bedsides a draw full of nasal sprays, eye drops and tablets. Listed below are a few alternatives to consider.

Quercetin
This is a super nutrient that naturally occurs in apples, berries, cherries and certain veggies such as onions, kale and broccoli. If your not keen on any of the above then it is available in a supplement from health food shops.

Research conducted in Japan found that out of a group of 24 participants taking quercetin most had significantly fewer problems with itchy, sore and watering eyes than those in a placebo group.

Vitamin C
Berries, peppers, citrus fruits, tropical fruits and most green veg all contain Vitamin C which is the main antioxidant found in the respiratory passages and is also thought to carry an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory effect.

Omega 3
Omega 3 can be found in oily fish and is most well known for its general anti-inflammatory effects. Try taking a fish oil capsule daily along with chamomile, ginger or peppermint tea which are thought to have similar effects.
