Hello! My name is Liz Fleming and I am a registered Dietitian (RD) with over 10 years' experience of nutrition and dietary therapy in health, disease and disease prevention.
I am registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Dietetic Association (BDA) which means that my practice is regulated by law and that I am governed by an ethical code. These factors give you assurance that I will always provide a high standard of care; my services are based on up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease.
I have a specialist interest in the dietary management and prevention of Type 2 Diabetes but a passion more generally for overall disease prevention, health promotion and general wellbeing for all.
Through a combination of professional practice and personal experience, I am fully aware that a state of wellbeing and good health comes not just from nutrition but an altogether more holistic approach, encompassing factors which nourish not just the body, but the mind and soul as well. As such, I aim to bring together a range of therapies which support this more compassionate and rounded approach to health.
Training, qualifications & experience
I graduated from The University of Wales Institute in Cardiff with a First Class BSc Honours Degree in Applied Human Nutrition and Dietetics in 2005.
Over the past 11 years I have worked in a wide range of clinical and community settings within the NHS including acute medical wards, rehabilitation wards, residential and nursing homes, peoples' own homes, GP surgeries, clinics and community centres. My areas of clinical experience and expertise are as equally wide and varied as the settings I have worked in and include weight management, malnutrition, diabetes, digestive health, home enteral (tube) feeding and cardiac rehabilitation, to name but a few.
I currently specialise in both the prevention and the lifestyle management of Type 2 Diabetes, and whether you are at risk of developing the disease, or have already been diagnosed, I can work with you to prevent or to manage the condition through a range of dietary and lifestyle interventions. This will particularly suit you if you are keen to avoid taking multiple medications to control or prevent the condition.
I currently work for Sentinel Healthcare CiC SouthWest as a Healthy Eating Specialist within a Type 2 Diabetes Education Service in Plymouth and the South Hams.
If you have Type 2 Diabetes, and live within the area, you can ask your GP or Practice Nurse to refer you. This is a free service, funded by the NHS. Further information, including resources and referral forms can be found at:
