About me

I started off my working life as a nurse. For most of my 25 years as a nurse I worked in Intensive care units, looking after people following major surgery who needed temporary life support. Heart and lung surgery was my speciality and I loved it. I juggled this with marriage, home building and the love of two tiny beings I helped to create. Later, one of these beings was diagnosed with a disorder. The challenge of ensuring his needs were met at home and school plus the juggling act had a major impact on my own health but I wasn’t deterred. As a mum I had an important task ahead of me. At the age of 36 I headed off to University to study psychology. The degree offered many answers but not enough. By this time my child, now 11 yrs old, was attending his 5th school, my PGCE was supposed to be the magic bullet that would help me to home educate. That never materialised because on the PGCE course I met a few key people who would change my trajectory.

Also at the end of 1999 life just came to a standstill when I was diagnosed with my own health issues. It was at this time I realised that the physical symptoms my child experienced were exactly the same as mine. Did we have the same condition? Well both conditions manifested physically in a similar way but at different ages so I believe they have the same underlying pathology. Whereas my child had been born ill I hadn’t, so I had a benchmark on which to gauge health. He didn’t even know he was ill.

At this point my learning had come full circle and I was now heavily into nutritional therapy. I retrained at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition and set us both on a nutrition and lifestyle plan that gave us our lives back. I won't pretend it was easy because it wasn’t and it took time as all healing does. There were ups and downs along the way, especially opposition from others. But I'm proud to say the same child graduated with his own Masters degree in engineering and holds down a full time job as a software engineer. I am here now on the premise that because I have “been there” I can help others. I am the Director of a Masters degree course in Nutritional Therapy in York and I also teach on the course. I have two rewards in life that further fuel my passion. The first is seeing my clients become more empowered to control their own health and well-being. The second is seeing my students graduate and set up their own practice to further benefit society.

For the last three years I have also worked with an eminent doctor, trained in environmental allergy. This has given me the opportunity to help those who had really complex needs. I continue to do this in my own clinic. In addition I am now a published co-author of a self help book that is part of the The vitamin Cure portfolio.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a MSc in Nutritional Science and Practice and am currently studying for my PGCHE. In addition to running my own clinic I am course director for a MSc / PGDip in Nutritional Therapy. I also teach on the course and act as clinic supervisor. My own learning has come full circle from Nursing through psychology, teaching and finally nutrition. Now I am where i belong and the learning continues.
