Healthy Ageing Secrets
"You're as young as you feel", "Grow old gracefully", "Life begins at 40" are just a handful of the rather more encouraging remarks we hear as we climb higher on the ladder of life!
Whether blessed with youth, fighting furiously against the ageing process, or moving graciously with the flow of the life, I am sure the following words will resonate with all of you on some level!
We grow old both on a physical level and on a mental level, and you'll appreciate why in a moment, that the mental aspect of ageing is just as important to address as the physical one. Never under-estimate the power of thought! But delving into that subject, lets look briefly at the ageing (or the healing) effects of the diet.
Caring for the physical body comes down to 3 things - breakfast, lunch and dinner! If you think i'm being rather simplistic here, you're right, I am! Eating a good diet is simple. In fact, it is the easiest and simplest thing in the world! You can either eat and drink your way to disease, OR eat your way to health and wellness! It is your choice.
Here are a handful of great healthy, anti-aging foods and drinks to incorporate into your breakfast, lunch and dinner:
A cup of green tea provides plenty of natural plant chemicals called polyphenols.
Berries are also full of antioxidants, and vitamin C. They will help provide your body vital nutrients.
Seeds and nuts
Seeds and nuts are some of the richest sources of many essential fats from the omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 family of fatty acids. Essential fats are pivotal to the health of the brain, body, hair and skin.
Avocados, olives and olive oil
Avocados are rich in healthy oil for glowing skin. Olives and olive oil are particular signatures of the Mediterranean diet.
One of the most accessible and healthy fruits happens to be the apple! Choose organic whenever you can.
Green, red and pink foods!
Spinach, kale, watercress, brocolli, tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon contain lutein and lycopene, powerful antioxidants that will help keep your eyes looking as gorgeous as you!
Pumpkin, squash and sweet potato
Orange is another trendy colour to get into your diet. Pumpkin and other squash such as butternut, onion or acorn squash are loaded with minerals and phytonutrients such as beta-carotene, as well as vitamin C that all feed the skin, and keep the insides glowing too. Sweet potatoes are another great veggie for helping to protect your skin, and overall health.
Prepare simple meals using plenty of fresh, natural foods, such as the ones I've described. Make fruit salads, fruity porridges or mueslis for breakfast, soups and salads for lunch, and simple vegetable-based stews, raw salads or stir-frys for your evening meal. Keep it fresh and colourful, and you cant go far wrong!
Now, another equally important aspect of healthy ageing and general well being is our overall attitude towards life, our thoughts, emotions and beliefs, and consequently, our daily actions and behaviour. We are, in fact, the product of all these! Think about the following question for a moment what do you focus on in your life? Do you talk about everything that is wrong in your life and the things you hate, OR, is your attention and conversation on the aspects of life that you love, and are really working? Believe me, you'll age far more quickly (mentally AND physically) if your primary focus is on the negative parts of life. It doesn't matter who you are, what age, creed, or background you hail from, every person has something that is truly great in his or her life. Sure, we all have challenges, and things that are frankly, less than great, but if you can learn to see the good in all situations, as well as the simple gifts that life has to offer, you will feel and function on a healthier level.
How do thoughts manifest physically?
Thoughts create emotions (positive or negative), and it is emotion (or energy in motion) that can markedly affect the entire physiology of the body, altering the metabolism and balance of hormones. These physiological processes affect every cell in the body! Without getting any more technical that is necessary here, remember this: negative emotions (fear, worry, anxiety, anger, hatred, jealousy) create mental and physical stress. Positive emotions on the other hand (love, joy, happiness, excitement, passion, and forgiveness), are literally healing and powerfully regenerative both on a physical and on a mental level.
Some of the many positive aspects of getting older that spring to my mind include benefiting and learning from lifes experiences, the wisdom we gain, as well as the enjoyment of solid friendships, family and other close relationships. We grow more confident in ourselves with age too. We know who we are and the things we love doing, and worry less about the little things. We tend to focus less on material possessions (or at least spend on quality and not quantity), and certainly appreciate the things money cant buy! We also appreciate the very simple things in life such as the beauty of the countryside, a smile and a kind word, maybe seaside, ocean or country living, fresh unpolluted air, as well as our very own unique gifts, talents and abilities.
So rather than worry about the process of ageing, begin to celebrate it in as many ways as you can possibly think of. Write down ALL the positive aspects of your life, and really do live life to the full.
