NICE calls for trans-fats ban

NHS watchdog NICE have called for a ban on trans-fats, found in the likes of biscuits, cakes and fast food from English products as they can be damaging to health.

NICE are also campaigning for further reductions in salt and saturated fats in a bid to prevent the number of deaths caused by cardiovascular disease, which is currently the biggest cause of fatalities in the U.K.

Specialists working for the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) have said around 40,000 of the 150,000 annual deaths are preventable and reducing salt, sat fats and trans fats would save the NHS around £1bn.

Professor Mike Kelly from NICE has suggested the government consider supportive legislation if food manufacturers are unwilling to reduce their saturated fat levels. NICE are also calling for food labels to carry a colour code traffic light scheme, even though this idea was rejected by the European parliament last week.
